In-Home in New York, Virtual Anywhere

Say Goodbye to Diapers. For Real This Time.

You're Not Starting From Zero

You've Basically Tried It All

By the time families call Jess, they've usually already tried it themselves, more than once.

Feeling exhausted and out of ideas? That is exactly where Jess starts.

"We tried 'Oh Crap Potty Training' and it just fizzled out." "We did ABA therapy and hit a wall." "He was trained... then he regressed." "She's resisting and school's around the corner." "Every generic tip has failed our neurodivergent kid."

The Process

How the Magic Happens

  1. 1

    Reach out

Send an inquiry through the contact form with a bit about your child and your situation.

  2. 2

    Assessment call

A phone or video call to check readiness (yours and your child's) and talk through what is going on.

  3. 3

    Custom plan

Jess builds a potty training plan tailored to your child, not a one size fits all script.

  4. 4

    Training days

In-home or virtual sessions where Jess works directly with your child and teaches you and any caregivers the method.

  5. 5

    Ongoing support

Three weeks of follow-up help by phone, video, email, or text while the habit fully sets in.

The Method

No Magic Wand. No One Size Fits All.

Jess started out with a three day method she learned from her mother and her mother's mentor, who wrote a book on potty training in three days. That is still the foundation. Full time potty training has taught her the rest: there is no set method, no set timeline, and no magic wand.

Finding your child's potty switch

The first job is a safe, secure, fun environment where Jess can build a real bond with your child. That connection is what lets her get to the root of the potty struggle instead of pushing through it. The goal is a child who feels an autonomous hold over the process, not one who complies.

Readiness goes both ways

Every package starts with an assessment of your child's readiness and yours. This will not work without every parent and caregiver able to commit fully. It takes diligence, patience, and some genuinely frustrating moments. Jess would rather say that plainly up front than have you find out on day two.

Think of it as bootcamp

A few intensive days is where your child learns all the steps and picks up the skills. It is not a promise of zero accidents by day three. Shifting their mindset into a new normal usually takes a few more weeks, and follow through from you and your caregivers is what carries it.

When it takes longer

Some children are trained in as little as a day and a half. It typically takes longer if your child is over three, has been trained and regressed, or is neurodivergent. If your child does not take to the method, Jess re-evaluates and talks you through how to pivot rather than repeating something that is not working.

Jess brings 25+ years of working with children and 20+ years of potty training experience to reading what is actually going on with yours. Every child is different, so which package fits gets decided together on your assessment call.

Jessica Thompson, founder of Practically Perfect Potty Training
Meet Jess

Your Potty Training Fairy Godmother

Jessica Summer Thompson is a potty training and child behavior specialist with over two decades of caregiving, behavioral consulting, parent coaching, and potty training experience. Working with children runs in her family: her mother ran a childcare center for over twenty-five years, and Jess spent nearly five of them as her assistant, which is where she first learned to potty train.

She moved to NYC in 2004 and earned her B.A. in Writing and Literature from Columbia University. From 2004 to 2016 she worked as a nanny, household manager, parent coach and tutor, caring for children from infancy through the pre-teen years, with special needs children as her niche. She launched Practically Perfect Potty Training in 2022.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no universal timeline. Some kids are trained in as little as a day and a half. Others, especially children who are neurodivergent, have regressed, or have significant potty anxiety, take longer. During your assessment call, we will talk through your child's specific situation and figure out which package and timeline makes sense.

Yes. Working with neurodivergent and special needs children is one of Jess's core specialties, built on over 20 years of experience with kids who have autism, ADHD/ADD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech and cognitive delays, and more. The method is never one size fits all, it is built around your child.

Regression happens, and it does not mean training failed. Every package includes weeks of virtual follow-up support so we can troubleshoot together, and if a full reset is needed, that is exactly the kind of situation the in-home packages are built to handle.

Both. Virtual coaching is available anywhere, and in-home sessions are offered in and around NYC (commute fees apply outside about an hour from Bushwick). We will figure out together which format fits your family best.

Yes. Jess takes in-home bookings outside NYC. You cover the travel fare from Brooklyn to your home, whether that is train, bus, rideshare, flight or rental car, plus either the daily commute fee or lodging if you are more than 1 hour 45 minutes away. The total depends on where you are, so get in touch with your location and dates and she will put a number together. Overnight sessions and weekend work each carry their own fee. If travel does not make sense for your family, virtual coaching covers the same method from anywhere.

That is actually a lot of who Jess works with. Many families come to her after other methods, including ABA and popular potty training books, have not worked. The goal is to find what actually works for your child, not repeat what has already failed.
